Get your money back if you backed McIlroy to win the 2019 Open at PointsBet. No maximum.

On Thursday morning, bettors in New Jersey who had backed Rory McIlroy in the Open Championship were waking up to a nightmare scenario.

The first Northern Irishman to be home favorite in an Open since 1951 hit his opening tee shot out of bounds, before taking an unprecedented - and almost unbelievable - eight shots on the first hole.

He followed that up with some recovery play before succumbing to a +8 round of 79. He sits in 150th place overnight, thirteen shots from the lead.

Rory started the tournament as favorite with all NJ online books, and at the time of writing is priced at +50000 with DraftKings, and +25000 with PointsBet.

A quicker fall from grace for a major favorite than we can ever remember.

Bets Refunded

Don't fret though! If you backed McIlroy with PointsBet NJ, your stake will be refunded in full!

Rory McIlroy Refund

In a fairly outrageous gesture, PB are calling this a "good karma refund". It's a good sign for NJ bettors, as this is something that's been seen before with books in Australia and the UK.

If you're planning to bet on a strong favorite any time soon, look no further than Pointsbet - if the worst happens, you know you have a chance to get your money back!

Often with a refund like this, there are concessions. Not so much this time:

  • No maximum refund
  • Only excluded bets are H2H, boosters and props
