It's the final of Wimbledon 2019. Djokovic going for his fifth Wimbledon title, Federer his ninth and judging by their recent competitive battles we are in for a treat.

Djokovic had an extremely easy route to the semis, beating four unseeded players before steamrolling 27th seed David Goffin in the quarters and overcoming a mid-match slump to reach the Wimbledon final with a four-set victory over Roberto Bautista Agut.

The Serb has a stellar record at Wimbledon, winning it on four occasions ('11, '14, '15 and '18) with one runner-up spot ('13) and is playing very well.

"This is the kind of match that I always dreamed of being part of as a young boy with the tennis racquet. This is what I worked for. I wanted to be in this position,” said Djokovic. “I have a chance to fight for a trophy. Regardless of who's across the net or what is happening, I'll definitely give it my all.”

Federer has played sublime through the Championships without being at his absolute best. Friday's semi-final encounter with Nadal was some sequel to the epic 2008 title match but it does make us question whether that exhaustive victory will have taken a toll on the 37 years old Swiss.

“I know it's not over yet. There's no point to start partying tonight or getting too emotional, too happy about it, even though I am extremely happy,” said Federer. “If it was the end of the tournament, it would be very different right now. I'd be speaking very different, feeling very different.

“There is, unfortunately, or fortunately, one more match. It's great on many levels. But I’ve got to put my head down and stay focused.”

Verdict

Tough call as always. Both players have each dropped two sets this fortnight and both carry different playing styles and temperaments. You can bet the crowd will be cheering Roger Federer, the darling of SW19 all the way to a 21st grand slam title but history tells us that when a determined Novak Djokovic gets the chance to fight for a trophy he takes it.
