Understanding how the odds work

In a nutshell, betting odds tell you how likely an event is to happen and what your winnings will be if your bet wins.

Traditionally, the sportsbooks list NRL odds in a moneyline format where you are merely looking for your chosen team to win. The moneyline remains the most popular football bet and the sportsbooks make it a breeze to work out what your bet could bring home.  For example, a football game might look like this:

Moneyline Example

The team with the minus sign is considered the favorite, which in this instance is New England while Green Bay with the plus sign is the underdog.

In this scenario, for every $265 you place on favourites New England you will win $100. Should underdogs Green Bay pull off a win, then you would walk away with $265 for a $100 wager.

Simply put, the moneyline is constructed around $100 wagers, this makes it easy to browse the selections, but there's no need to bet that amount you can increase or decrease your wager depending on your expectations.

Other Types of NFL Bets

If you want to get elbow-deep into some other forms of NFL wagers, you can seek out heaps of different betting markets, all using the same moneyline odds format.

When you click on a specific NFL game at your sportsbook, you have many different options.  So let's break away from the moneyline to provide some details on other types of NFL Bets.

NFL Point Spreads

Just like a moneyline bet, point spreads require you to predict the winner of a game after the oddsmakers have levelled the playing field by giving points to the underdog team and taking away points from the favorite.

Imagine if you will, the example above but as a point spread and it may look like this.

Point Spread Example

You can see that favorites New England are giving 6 points (-6.5) which means at the end of the game they must beat Green Bay by more than 6.5 points for your bet to win.

Underdogs Green Bay have been given 6.5 points (+6.5) which means if they lose by fewer than 6.5 points your bet wins.

Point spread betting is designed to give each team a roughly equal chance which is reflected in the odds.

Point Totals

The sportsbooks are always well stocked with point totals for you to bet on. You will often see the markets referred to as Over/Under.

While a moneyline and point spread bet relies upon the winner of the game, point totals ask you to predict how many points will be scored by both teams in total at the end of the game.

Click on a point totals market and you will see the sportsbook has predicted their total for the specific matchup.  You then bet whether the actual point total will be over or under the set number.

For example in an NFL game, the points total may be set at 44.5 points by the sportsbook. Bet over if you think the total points will be higher than 44.5. Bet under if you think the total points will be less than 44.5.

Parlays allow you to delve into many markets combining your wager into one bet for a much bigger payout.

NFL Parlay Example

Yes, there's a catch. There's always a catch.  Every leg of your parlay must-win for the bet to be successful. If just one leg of your bet loses you lose your entire wager.

You can combine straight-up bets, prop bets, spreads or totals over various sports or you may decide to create a Parlay solely from NFL games.

Back up your opinion with two leg-parlays, three-leg parlays, four-leg parlays or bigger and soak up some of the most ridiculous and impressive big-odds that come when you start to construct a parlay bet.

If you are feeling ridiculously lucky and if you can pull it off you could pocket a tidy earner.

Prop Bets

There more to life than betting on who will win the game or what the final score will be and the sportsbooks are packed with NFL prop bets, also known as propositions.

Get curious and check out the massive range of NFL Prop markets available. Here are a few you are likely to see at NJ sportsbooks.
