Spread Betting

Often referred to as line betting, spread betting requires you to predict the winner of a game after the oddsmakers have levelled the playing field by giving points to the underdog team and taking away points from the favorite.

For example.  Betting on the NBA at DraftKings you might see

Utah Jazz -5.5 vs  New Orleans Pelicans +5.5

In this scenario, if you bet on Jazz to beat the spread, they must win by more than 5.5 points for your wager to win.  However, if you bet on the Pelicans to cover the spread, they have to win the game outright or lose by a maximum of 5 points. Spread betting is designed to give each team a roughly equal chance which is reflected in the odds.

The sportsbooks are always well stocked with point totals for you to bet on. You will often see the markets referred to as Over/Under.

While a moneyline and point spread bet relies upon the winner of the game, point totals ask you to predict how many points will be scored by both teams in total at the end of the game.

Click on a point totals market and you will see the sportsbook has predicted their total for the specific matchup.  You then bet whether the actual point total will be over or under the set number.

For example in an NBA game, the points total may be set at 184.5 points by the sportsbook. Bet over if you think the total points in the game will be higher than 184.5. Bet under if you think the total points will be less than 184.5.

When betting totals be aware that the sportsbook will usually display the odds with (-) and (+).  These signs represent the underdog with the positive sign and the favorite with the negative sign.

Parlays allow you to delve into many markets combining your wager into one bet for a much bigger payout.

Every leg of your parlay must-win for the bet to be successful. If just one leg of your bet loses you lose your entire wager.

You can combine straight-up bets, prop bets, spreads or totals over various sports or you may decide to create a Parlay solely from basketball games.

Back up your opinion with two leg-parlays, three-leg parlays, four-leg parlays or bigger and soak up some of the most ridiculous and impressive big-odds that come when you start to construct a parlay bet.

Prop Bets

There more to betting on basketball than predicting who will win the game or what the final score will be and the sportsbooks are packed with prop bets, also known as propositions.

Take a look at the NBA markets and you'll see that the prop bets usually fall in two groups, player and team props. Here are some examples of the most popular basketball prop bets.

  1. NBA Player Props
  2. NBA Team Props
  3. NBA Playoff Props
  4. NBA Finals Props
  5. All-Star Game Props
  6. Slam Dunk Contest Props
