It’s been one of the most interesting US Open tennis tournaments for many a year and we have finally reached the conclusion of it with a match that no pundit would have predicted at the opening of it.

We get underway on Sunday when Daniil Medvedev takes on Rafael Nadal, the action will start at around 3pm Eastern time.

This isn’t the final the audience will have expected and fans will be hoping the Russian player can make it competitive or it could be over fairly quickly.

That scenario isn’t beyond Daniil Medvedev though and has had the finest couple of weeks of his tennis career and it would be an incredible story for him to win his first grand slam final.

He has defeated some top-class players including Stan Wawrinka and Feliciano Lopez on the way here and he probably produced his best performance so far in the semi-final match.

It was on Friday afternoon he showed yet again he belongs on the big stage with a comfortable straight-sets win over Grigor Medvedev, showing serious fight as well as ability when a break down in the opener. After winning that on a tie break he cruised through the last two sets to secure his place here.

Spanish player Rafael Nadal can move to one grand slam behind Roger Federer with a victory here in the all-time standings so he has even more motivation than usual to get this done.

He has cruised through to this stage defeating players of the class of Marin Cilic and Diego Schwartzman easily and under the lights on Friday he was magnificent when seeing off Italian upstart Matteo Berrettini by a 3-0 scoreline.

He had a tricky first set and even had to face a couple of sets points before nerves finally appeared to get the better of his rookie opponent, as soon as Nadal had though clinched the opener it was one-way traffic and he cruised through the rest of the match.

The head to head between these two players is 1-0 to the Spaniard and worryingly for the Russian player it was a hammering just a couple of months ago in the Canadian Open, Nadal won the match in straight sets by a scoreline of 6-3,6-0.

Daniil Medvedev could win his first tournament here but this looks too much to ask at this stage and whilst he’s competent from the back of the court he isn’t as good as Nadal is. The Spanish player should dominate the rallies here and it’s hard to see him losing unless he has a serious off day.

Our Pick

Rafael Nadal to win the match 3-0 pays out at +110 with Fanduel

This should be a terrific final but on the biggest stage of all we have to back Rafael Nadal to come through comfortably.

He has only lost one set in the whole tournament over the last two weeks and added to that he has recently beaten his opponent on a hard court in straight sets comfortably in Canada.

Expect Medvedev to give it his all in his first major final but the task here for him is surely too much.
