The NFL regular season finally kicks off this Thursday night with a meeting of two historic rivals.

The Green Bay Packers will hit the road to take on the Chicago Bears. The NFC North is expected to be a tight race this season between these two clubs and the Minnesota Vikings.

We’ll get our first glimpse at the lay of the land in the division for 2019 with the season-opening contest on NBC Thursday Night Football. As the oddsmakers see it, it’s looking like this game will be a tight one.

Packers NFL Week 1

It was a disappointing season for the Packers in 2018. The team finished up at 6-9-1, parting ways with head coach Mike McCarthy along the way. Matt LaFleur, former offensive coordinator of the Tennessee Titans, was hired to take his place.

The club was more active in the offseason than normal. Shoring up the defense was a big focus for both the draft and free agency. Newest members of the Packers include 1st round draft choice Rashan Gary, a DE out of Michigan, and free-agent signee LB Za’Darius Smith.

There are plenty of questions in the air as the season opener approaches, starting with how well LaFleur will mesh as the new man in charge. Aaron Rodgers is looking to bounce back from a disappointing season.

Assuming no kinks in the new system, the offense should be fine. Optimism is high that the defense will be much better after the offseason makeover.

Bears NFL Week 1

The Bears were one of the biggest surprises of last year. Matt Nagy did a stellar job in his 1st year at the helm, as the team took major steps forward on both sides of the ball.

A 12-4 regular season was good enough for a division title, but the team would bow out in the Wild Card round with a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The biggest change in Chicago comes at defensive coordinator. Vic Fangio is off to coach the Denver Broncos. The team has hired former Indianapolis Colts head coach Chuck Pagano as his replacement.

Total POints

While no major splashes were made in the offseason, the team took steps to plug holes on both sides of the ball.

Mitchell Trubisky made some strides last year, and the hope is that the signal-caller will take another leap forward in 2019. He has good talent around him, and his game seems to agree with the system in place.

While there has been a big change at DC, there remains plenty of talent for Pagano to work with.

Packers vs. Bears NFL Week 1

Chicago is a field goal favorite at home for this contest. The teams hooked up in Week 1 of last year as well.

The Packers would escape with a 24-23 win as 7-point home favorites after trailing for most of the game. The rematch was in Chicago later in the year, with the Bears taking a 24-17 decision as 6-point home favorites.

Our Pick

For this year’s opening game, we like the Packers to keep it close and cover. An outright upset wouldn’t stun us either.
