Winston Salem Tennis Round 2

The ATP Winston Salem event is off to a flyer with some terrific matches in the opening round. This is a wide-open draw and many players will like the look of their chances.

Two of them meet in the second round as Jeremy Chardy takes on Frances Tiafoe, the match is scheduled to start at 7pm Eastern.

Match Winner

We had some weather issues yesterday but the forecast looks better for today and we shouldn’t be playing into the early hours of the morning with sunny spells predicted.

Jeremy Chardy is certainly in the twilight of his career now but he’s still a threat to any player and has the talent to defeat almost anybody barring the top few players. He’ll come here in high spirits ready for another tilt at the US Open next week where he has historically played well.

Jeremy Chardy

He came through his last 64 match beating Raymond Saramiento in straight sets in a comfortable victory.

He has only been playing doubles recently and his last singles action before this week came back in Austria earlier this year where he reached the last eight before losing to Albert Ramos Vinolas.

Expect Chardy to come forward to the net to try and win the match and it could all come down to whether Tiafoe can pass him consistently, don’t expect a long match here and most rallies will be over quickly with the style of the Frenchman.

Tipped by many as a future winner of slam events, Frances Tiafoe has plenty of talent but needs to start to convert that into results on the men’s tour.

Game Handicap

At the age of just 17 he won the USTA Junior National Championships when he beat Stefan Kozlov and huge things have been expected of him ever since then.

He is still struggling to really make a breakthrough though and he needs to show his ability at some point if those pundits are to be proved correct. He was disappointing in Cincinnati last week as he went down to Roberto Bautista Agut after a good opening round win against Gael Monfils.

Criticism often comes his way for how lazy and lethargic he can appear on the court and his record isn’t good at all in final set deciders , showing that he still must have a lot of work to do on his fitness levels.

The H2H between these two on the ATP tour is 1-0 to the Frenchman when Jeremy Chardy defeated Tiafoe in straight sets at the Queens Club in London last year, the American does have a victory over this opponent on a Challenger clay court though.

Our Pick

Jeremy Chardy to win the match pays out at +140 with Fanduel.

This looks a real coin toss matchup and with the prices on offer the value surely has to be with the Frenchman, he looked in decent form in his last match and Tiafoe might be a little bit rusty coming into this contest.

Add this to the positive H2H record for Chardy and he looks a very good bet to advance to the next round.
