It’s been a very unpredictable US Open this year and nothing shows that more than this last eight match to be played on Wednesday, as a young Italian player who many won't have heard of in Marco Berrettini, will face off against the vibrant Frenchman Gael Monfils.

The match will get underway at around 2pm Eastern time.

MOneyline

Matteo Berrettini has come into this tournament completely under the radar and very few tennis fans will have watched him play before they see him take to the court for this match.

Nothing in the formbook suggested he was capable of this although given his young age he has already shown some decent form at Grand Slam events, having only been on the main tour for a couple of years he has already reached the third round at Roland Garros and the fourth round at Wimbledon in addition to this.

He has beaten some quality players to get here including Richard Gasquet and Jordan Thompson, whilst also still not needing to go to a deciding set in any of them. The last sixteen saw his best performance of the week when he defeated Andrey Rublev in straight sets.

He has won an ATP title, last year he defeated Roberto Bautista-Agut in Gstaad and looks to be a player with quite a bit future in the game, this may be early for him but we’ll learn a lot about the 23-year-old Italian and how he reacts to being on the big stage.

Gael Monfils is one of the most entertaining players on the tour and he’ll have plenty of support from a New York crowd that love his extravagance.

Matteo Berretini

After two easy victories, he showed he meant business this year when winning a pulsating five-set match against Denis Shapovalov, one of the longest matches of the tournament and one that included three tiebreakers.

He blew away Pablo Andujar on Monday in a farcical match where the Spaniard was so far out of his depth it was embarrassing for him, the player even apologizing to the fans at times.

There is no Head to Head record between the two players and we have no idea how the styles will match up, expect it to be a match played mainly from the back of the court.

A hard one to call as we still don’t know too much about the young Italian player, both of them clearly possess talent and it could come down to how consistent the Frenchman is and how his opponent handles the big occasion.

Our Pick

Gael Monfils to win the match pays out at -150 with Fanduel.

An unpredictable match but when a young player hits the big stage for the first time it can very often be an extremely tough assignment for them and Berrettini will never have played in front of such a global audience as he will here.

Monfils has played some of his best tennis for some time over the last few weeks and looks in fine form, he can advance to the semi-finals with a victory.
