Our series of NCAAF conference previews continues with a look at the Big 12. The Oklahoma Sooners have taken it down four years in a row, and they’re the favorites to do it again.

Let’s take a closer look at the Big 12 for 2019, starting with the odds to win the conference.

Favorites to Win the Big 12

Oklahoma Sooners

The Sooners won the Big 12 last year and earned a spot in the College Football Playoffs, falling to Alabama by a score of 45-34 in the semifinals. The program has delivered the Heisman Trophy winner for the past two seasons.

Jalen Hurts

Alabama transfer Jalen Hurts is slated to line up behind center this season, so we’ll see what he can do in the potent Lincoln Riley offense.

Oklahoma is deservedly favored to win the conference, but they don’t have the defense to compete with the heavyweights in the CFP.

Sooners Wins

Texas Longhorns

Last year’s runner-up in the Big 12 is the second choice on the odds board in 2019. The Longhorns returned to relevancy last season with a 9-3 regular season, and they look poised to be even better last time around.

Sam Ehlinger

The team took down Georgia in the Peach Bowl, a victory that had all the makings of a statement win.

Texas can bring it on both sides of the ball, but an improvement on defense would be more than welcome. Either way, this is perhaps the most complete team in the Big 12 for 2019.

Iowa State Cyclones

The Cyclones are a pesky squad which presented matchup troubles for a number of teams in 2018. During the regular season, the team went 2-2 versus Top 25 squads.

This year, they face Oklahoma and Texas in back-to-back weeks in November. Iowa State should be a factor in the Big 12 again.

Iowa State Wins

Baylor Bears

The Bears are an interesting team that could take a step forward or go backward. Oddsmakers have landed in the middle and christened Baylor with a projected win total of 7.5.

As with most of the Big 12 teams, an improvement on defense could make a big difference.

Oklahoma State Cowboys

The Cowboys are another conference team which no one wants to see on the schedule. While the stats may not show it, they do a better job on defense than many of their familiar foes.

Oklahoma State can play it close to the vest, as five of their nine conference games in 2018 were decided by six points or less.

Cowboys Wins

TCU Horned Frogs

There’s optimism that TCU will improve on last year’s 6-6 regular season. However, questions abound on offense, and the program has attrition to deal with on defense.

This is another Big 12 program with a projection of 7.5 wins with neither the Over or Under looking like a surprising result.

The Rest of the Big 12 for 2019

The rest of the Big 12 teams - Texas Tech, West Virginia, Kansas State, and Kansas - all have odds to win ranging from +2400 to +40000. All four of these teams are dealing with new coaching situations, so expectations are tempered.

Texas Tech tops the list for these programs with 6 projected wins, while Kansas is at the bottom with 3.

Bottom Line on the Big 12 in 2019

Oklahoma has become a juggernaut in the Big 12, but Texas is awake once again.

It should be an exciting season-long battle, and we’re expecting these two teams to settle it on the field on championship weekend.
