We’ve had a terrific opening couple of days at Flushing Meadows and we now move onto the second round of the US Open.

There are plenty of American players still standing and we’ll start our previews today with a big serving crowd-pleaser in Reilly Opelka, he takes on Dominik Koepfer and the match will get underway at around 5pm Eastern.

Match Winner

Reilly Opelka is one of the most interesting American players on the tour and has previous form for showing his best tennis at big events, having reached the final eight in Delray Beach last season.

His first-round match here was a terrific contest and he showed serious fight and a top-class ground game we have rarely witnessed to defeat the Italian Fabio Fognini in four sets.

He broke the serve of his opponent with regular effect and only lost a set on a tiebreaker, a mirror image of many of his matches on the tour.

Recent form has been very good and he scored an excellent victory over Borna Coric in Cincinnati before losing to the exciting young Australian Alex De Minaur. People are talking him up again and he could be ready for a big two weeks.

Dominik Koepfer

Dominik Koepfer is a solid if unspectacular player but does pose many problems for players outside of the elite group of men’s tennis.

He arrives in New York after winning his three qualifying matches so he isn’t short of match practice, finally earning his pace here after defeating the Japanese baseliner Uchiyama in straight sets.

The German started here at the US Open with a win over Jamie Munar in a long and tough match, he’ll need to try and hold his serve more comfortably if he is to advance further in the draw.

Steve Johnson defeated him in the Aptos Challenger final last month so he should be mentally ready for the big stage and it will all come down to whether he has the quality to live with his opponent here.

The American leads the head to head by 3-0 scoreline and seems to have the measure of his opponent, all four of these matches were on the hard courts in America and he only has only lost one set in those matches to the German player, in Dallas earlier this year.

Opelka will look to win this match by being extremely strong behind his big serve and gaining the break when presented with the opportunity if he returns as well as he did against Fognini it should be a comfortable victory for him.

Our Pick

Reilly Opelka to win the match pays out at -245 with DraftKings.

We aren’t going get rich backing the American player to win this match but this should be easy money for those prepared to go in at a short price.

Reilly Opelka was fantastic in the opening round here when beating Fognini and this is an opponent who is on a lower level than the Italian. He holds a 3-0 H2H record over Koepfer, all on hard courts and this should be a smooth passage to the next round for the American player.
