We are only a week away from the US Open tennis championships and that means we head to Wake Forest University in North Carolina for the ATP Winston Salem event.

Some big names have decided to play here this week and they don’t come much bigger than former World number 1 Andy Murray. The British player takes on Tennys Sandgren under the center court lights, the match is scheduled to start at 7pm Eastern.

Match Winner

Tennys Sandgren is a bit of an enigma on the tennis court but he undoubtedly possesses some serious ability when he gets its right, he has reached the quarter-finals of the 2018 Australian Open and the fourth round of this year's Wimbledon and might prefer the courts here given they are said to be faster than usual.

Recent form isn’t great and he has lost all three of the hardcourt matches he has played in North America, he went out in the qualifiers last week in Cincinnati and will still be upset at the way it turned out.

It was a match against Ivo Karlovic and it was an inexplicable loss given he was 5-1 up in the deciding tie break and somehow managed to lose it 7-5 from that position, a good run here will be ideal before Flushing Meadows.

Andy Murray is still only really playing for fitness but does say he hopes to go deep into the week here as he plays his second singles tournament since recovering from hip surgery that threatened to end his career.

It was a muted comeback as he lost 6-4 6-4 to Richard Gasquet in Cincinnati last week in his first singles match since January's Australian Open.

Game Handicap

He won’t be playing in the US Open as he is quite open about how his body simply won’t allow him at this point in time to compete in a best of five sets match and it’s going to be a long road back for a player with his style and at his age to be competitive at the peak of the game.

His real target is to return home next year and play Wimbledon for a final time, that looks a long way off at the moment but if anyone can recover from such an injury it’s Andy Murray, the winner of this match will play the second seed and world number 38 Denis Shapovalov in the second round.

These two have never played each other before on either the ATP or the Challenger tour.

Our Pick

Tennys Sandgren to win the match pays +106 with Fanduel.

This could be a bit too early for the Scottish player and he found out just last week how tough this level of tennis was to try and walk straight back into.

Gasquet cruised past Murray, rarely looking troubled and it’s hard to see him having improved much in just a week since that match. Sandgren is a very competent player and he should have enough here to win the match, the deeper he takes it the more it should favor him.
